Starbucks pop-up Tokyo

Ok, so here we are again, back in daily business after what was a whirlwind week of travels. I was sincerely hoping to post daily last week but this proved to be somewhat of a challenge. Nevertheless, two design posts lit up last week so thank you for staying true and checking in with Nest of Pearls.

Recently I posted a story on a quirky & funky little chair by the Japanese design group nendo and have since then often returned to their site to peruse the simplicity and modernity of their work. The philosophy of nendo is to create and regroup the '!' moments (exclamation mark moments) in our day, those that wake our excitement and stir our imagination, setting our motivation into drive.

In my enjoying their work I came across the below Tokyo Starbucks pop-up shop projectin which visitors are invited to learn more about the brand's large variety of drinks. In fact, the space was designed to be like a library, with bookshelves, on which are positioned books with covers in nine different colours, whereby each book colour corresponds to a different drink. Visitors are invited to stroll around the space, freely pulling books off shelves and choosing the drink which best suits their character and taste. At the counter, visitors can trade the book for an actual espresso drink, but retain the book cover which tells them about the drink they have chosen. The idea behind the pop-up shop concept is to allow coffee lovers to chose their coffee with the patience and love with which they would chose a book.

Vastly different to the average coffee shop, this space is funky, simple and leaves room for the mind to breathe and dream. I love the soft gradation of colour across the book spines and the nod this dedicates to delicious coffee flavours and aromas.
